How Much Does AI SEO Cost in 2026? AEO and GEO Pricing Explained

The Short Answer

Most AI SEO engagements in the US market run somewhere between $1,500 and $7,500 per month. Light local programs start around $500 to $1,000. Competitive multi location or national work runs well above $7,500.

Those are market observations, not a rate card, and the range is wide enough to be nearly useless on its own. Two companies paying $2,500 a month can receive completely different work.

So here is the more useful framing, and it is the argument this whole article makes:

The cost depends almost entirely on whether someone is selling you an AI add-on or actually doing the foundational work. The add-on version is a monitoring dashboard and a monthly report with the word ChatGPT in it. The real version is SEO, entity clarity, content, technical improvements, third party authority, reviews, and measurement, which is a substantial program regardless of what it is called.

There Is No Submit Button

Worth clearing up before any pricing discussion, because it changes what you should be willing to pay for.

There is no way to register a business with ChatGPT. No paid inclusion in Perplexity. No form for AI Overviews. Google has said plainly that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode involves no additional technical requirements beyond ordinary Search eligibility, and its guidance points at the same things it has always pointed at: unique, useful content and normal technical health.

That is inconvenient for anyone selling AI SEO as a secret, and it is good news for anyone buying it. It means the work is knowable rather than mystical.

Winning AI visibility means becoming the company that search engines and third party sources give AI systems the strongest evidence to recommend. That is it. If a proposal implies otherwise, the price is the second problem.

What AI SEO Actually Includes

The credible service, in rough order of how much it matters:

Entity clarity. Your business name, services, locations, and category described identically everywhere they appear: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, industry listings, social profiles. Inconsistency here is the single most common reason an AI system describes a company vaguely or confuses it with another.

Answer ready content. Pages that address the specific questions buyers actually ask, written so the answer is extractable rather than buried in paragraph four of a brand story.

Technical foundations. Crawlable, fast, rendering without JavaScript dependence, with clean structured data. Unremarkable, and pages that cannot be retrieved cannot be cited.

Third party evidence. Mentions, listings, and coverage on sites that are not yours. This is often where the real budget goes, and it is the least glamorous line on the invoice.

Reviews. Volume, recency, and substance. Assistants summarise reputation, and they summarise what exists.

Measurement. Tracking what assistants currently say about you and whether it changes. Useful, and it is instrumentation rather than the service itself.

Notice what is not on that list: prompt engineering, submitting to AI directories, and schema tricks that supposedly force citation. If a proposal is mostly those, that is the tell.

The methodology behind this is set out in full on our AI SEO service page, with the technical side in generative engine optimization.

The Pricing Models You Will See

ModelWhat it usually meansWhen it makes sense
AI add-on to an existing SEO retainerMonitoring plus a report section. Typically a few hundred a monthOnly when the core SEO is already strong
Bundled into SEONo separate line. The work is simply part of the programMost businesses. This is usually correct
Standalone AEO or GEO retainerA separate vendor doing entity, content, and authority workRarely. Usually duplicates SEO you already buy
Project or auditOne time assessment and a fix listGood diagnostic, does not compound on its own
Performance or citation basedPriced against appearances in AI answersTreat with caution. The metric is volatile and easy to game

The second row is the honest default. For most companies, AI visibility is an outcome of good SEO rather than a separate discipline with its own invoice.

What Each Budget Level Actually Buys

Around $500 a month. Realistically this funds a few hours. Expect Google Business Profile management, basic listing consistency, and occasional content. That is genuinely useful for a single location local business with little competition, and it is not going to move a competitive market. Be suspicious of anyone promising AI visibility at this level in a contested category, because the hours do not exist.

$1,500 to $3,000 a month. Where most small and mid sized businesses land, and where the work starts compounding. Enough for consistent content, entity and listing cleanup, technical fixes, a working review system, some third party authority, and real measurement. The most common failure at this level is spreading the budget so thin across channels that nothing reaches escape velocity.

$3,000 to $7,500 and above. Competitive markets, multiple locations, or national reach. Substantial content production, sustained authority building, deeper technical work, and reporting that ties visibility to pipeline rather than to impressions. At this level you should expect to see named deliverables and a strategist who can explain why each one is in the plan.

The pattern worth noticing: the difference between tiers is hours and output, not access to a different technique. Nobody is unlocking a better AI method at $7,500 that is unavailable at $2,000.

AI SEO Versus Traditional SEO Pricing

They overlap almost entirely, and anyone pricing them as separate disciplines should be asked to justify it.

Conventional SEO pricing in most US markets runs from a few hundred a month for light local work to five figures for enterprise campaigns, which we broke down in what SEO costs. AI SEO pricing sits in the same band because it is largely the same work.

What genuinely differs is small: monitoring what assistants say, some emphasis on answer formatting, and more attention to entity consistency than a traditional program might give. That is a meaningful refinement. It is not a second service.

Our actual recommendation: for most businesses, we would not recommend paying a separate $2,000 AEO retainer when the company's underlying SEO is poor. That money buys more by fixing the foundation, and the AI visibility follows from it. A separate AI line item earns its place only when the core is already strong and you are optimising at the margin.

What Actually Makes It Expensive

Cost concentrates in four places, and none of them are AI specific:

Content production. Writing substantive pages that answer real questions, with someone who understands the business involved. This is the largest line in most credible programs.

Third party authority. Earning mentions and coverage outside your own site. Slow, labour intensive, and the hardest thing for a competitor to replicate.

Technical remediation. If the site is slow, poorly structured, or renders through JavaScript that crawlers struggle with, that gets fixed before anything else works.

Market competitiveness. The same program costs more in a contested category because the bar is higher.

What is cheap: monitoring tools and dashboards. If a large share of your invoice is reporting, you are buying software at agency margins.

Red Flags When Comparing Proposals

Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Not purchasable. Nobody can promise it.

A submission or registration service. There is nothing to submit to.

AI SEO priced as an add-on to weak SEO. Optimising a thin foundation for AI is optimising nothing.

No mention of reviews, listings, or third party mentions. Then it is not an entity or authority program.

Reporting built on impressions and rankings only. Neither tells you whether an assistant recommends you.

Secret proprietary methodology. The work is well understood. Specificity is a better signal than mystique.

A price with no scope. The most common one. Ask what percentage of hours goes to content, technical work, and authority versus reporting, and compare the answers rather than the totals.

Is It Worth It?

Yes for the underlying work, and the reason is that it is not a bet on AI.

Entity consistency, substantive content, technical health, reviews, and third party authority improve conventional search visibility regardless of what happens with assistants. If AI referrals grow, you are positioned. If they stall, you have still bought the best available SEO. That is an unusually low downside for an emerging channel.

What is not worth it is a premium for a separate AI service duplicating SEO you already pay for. The test is simple: name what the AI portion funds that the SEO portion does not. If the honest answer is monitoring and a report section, that is a reporting fee.

Working Out What You Need

Find out what assistants currently say about you. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity who they would recommend in your category and market. The answer is your baseline and it takes ten minutes.

Check whether you appear at all. Absence and misdescription are different problems with different fixes. If a competitor comes up instead, why ChatGPT recommends your competitor works through the causes in order.

Audit your entity consistency. Name, address, category, and services across your site, Google Business Profile, and major directories. Free, and it resolves a surprising share of cases.

Assess your SEO honestly. If you do not rank for your core commercial terms, that is the project. AI visibility follows.

Then decide what you are buying. Foundational work, bundled, with AI visibility as an outcome and a reporting line. That is the arrangement we would recommend for most businesses.

How We Handle Pricing

We do not publish a rate card, and the reason is the same one that makes the range at the top of this article unhelpful. A single location service business with clean listings and a decent site is a different project from a multi location company with inconsistent entity data and a rendering problem. One number would overcharge one and under serve the other.

What we do instead is look first: where you currently stand in search and in AI answers, who holds the visibility you want, and what the gap actually requires. The proposal that follows is itemised, so you can see what share goes to content, technical work, and authority. Sometimes it says your best first dollar is the website or conversion tracking rather than AI SEO, and we will tell you that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AI SEO cost?

In the US market most AI SEO engagements fall between roughly $1,500 and $7,500 per month, with light local programs starting near $500 to $1,000 and competitive multi location or national work running well above $7,500. Those are market observations rather than a rate card. The more useful question is what the money buys, because the same figure can fund genuine foundational work or a thin add-on layered onto an existing retainer. Ask what percentage of the hours go to content, technical work, and third party authority versus reporting.

Should I pay separately for SEO and AEO?

For most businesses, no, and we would actively advise against a separate AEO retainer when the underlying SEO is weak. The signals AI assistants rely on are largely the same signals search engines rely on: crawlable content that answers real questions, a clear and consistent business entity, reviews, and credible third party mentions. Paying one vendor to build that foundation and a second vendor to optimise for AI on top of it usually means paying twice for overlapping work. A separate line item makes sense only when the core SEO is already strong.

What does an AI SEO agency actually do?

The credible version is unglamorous. Entity work so your business name, services, and locations are described consistently everywhere they appear. Content that answers the specific questions buyers ask, structured so a machine can extract a clean answer. Technical work so pages are crawlable and fast and render without JavaScript dependence. Review and reputation building. Earning mentions on third party sites that AI systems treat as evidence. And measurement of what assistants actually say about you. If a proposal is mostly about prompt engineering, be careful.

Is AI SEO worth paying for?

It is worth paying for the underlying work, which produces value whether or not assistants ever send you a visitor, because the same foundation improves conventional search. It is not worth paying a premium for a separate AI service that duplicates SEO you are already buying. The honest test is whether you can name what the AI portion of the invoice funds that the SEO portion does not. If the answer is monitoring and a monthly report, that is a reporting fee rather than a service.

Is there a way to submit my business to ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. There is no submission form, no paid inclusion, and no technical setting that registers a company with an AI assistant. Google has stated that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode carries no additional technical requirements beyond ordinary Search eligibility. Visibility comes from being the business that search systems and third party sources give the strongest, most consistent evidence about. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in an AI assistant is selling something that does not exist.
