Answer Engine Optimization Agency Checklist: How to Compare AEO Providers
by Michael Santiago, Fullstack Developer & SEO

What to Look For in an Answer Engine Optimization Agency
The right answer engine optimization agency can show you, before you sign, how it will measure whether AI assistants mention your business, what work it will do to change that, and how that work fits with the SEO you already have. Most of the real difference between providers sits in those three things, not in their vocabulary. Use the checklist and scorecard below to compare them side by side.
A quick definition so we are comparing the same thing. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of getting your business named, described accurately, and linked when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question in your field.
One fact frames everything else. Google's documentation on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary, and that existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile. So a credible AEO provider will sound a lot like a credible SEO provider. That is not a weakness. A pitch that sounds nothing like SEO is the thing to be wary of.
Start With How They Measure
Measurement is where AEO providers differ most, and where weak ones hide. Ask to see a sample before you sign.
The prompt set. Which questions will they ask the assistants on your behalf? They should be the questions your buyers actually ask, in your market, written the way people speak, not your brand name typed into a chat box. Ask to see the list and ask who wrote it.
Which assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode do not behave identically. Google itself notes that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary. Each assistant that matters to your buyers should be measured on its own.
Repeat runs. Ask an assistant the same question twice and you may get two different lists. A single screenshot is an anecdote. Ask how many times each prompt is run and how they report the variation.
A baseline before any work starts. Without one, any later improvement is a story rather than a measurement.
A path to leads. Mentions are a means, not the goal. Google reports traffic from AI features inside the overall Web search numbers in Search Console rather than as a separate line, so ask any provider that promises an AI Overviews click report where the number comes from. A simple "how did you hear about us" field with AI assistants as an option is often more honest than a dashboard.
Then Look at the Work Itself
Once you know how they will measure, ask what they will actually do each month. These are the areas a real program covers.
Crawl access. If an assistant cannot read your site, nothing else matters. Google lists allowing crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN or hosting setup as a basic practice. OpenAI's crawler documentation states that sites opted out of its search crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A good provider checks this in week one, because a firewall or security setting can block these crawlers without anyone deciding to.
Pages that answer real questions. Specific questions, answered directly near the top of a page, by someone who knows the subject. Ask how they will find the questions and who will supply the expertise.
Consistent business facts. Your name, services, locations, and contact details should match across your site, your Google Business Profile, and the directories in your industry. Google's own list of practices includes keeping Business Profile information up to date.
Mentions on sites you do not own. Assistants draw on what other sources say about you, not only on what you say about yourself. Ask how mentions will be earned, and be clear that bought placements are not the same thing.
Reviews. Volume, recency, and what customers actually say about the work.
Structured data that matches the page. Google's guidance is that structured data should match the visible text. Markup that claims things the page does not say is a liability.
Ask what share of their hours goes to each of these versus reporting. We go into how that split should look in what AI SEO costs and what it should include.
Bundled With SEO or Separate?
Because AI visibility rests on the same foundation as search visibility, a standalone AEO provider working on top of someone else's SEO means two vendors editing the same pages with different goals. Ask who owns site changes and how conflicts get resolved.
A separate provider makes sense in narrower cases: your SEO is strong and run in house, and you want independent measurement plus focused help on entity consistency and third party mentions. If your conventional search visibility is weak, fix that first. The reasons are laid out in why ChatGPT recommends your competitor instead of you.
Claims to Distrust
Guaranteed placement in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews. Nobody controls what an assistant says.
"Submitting" your business to AI. Visibility depends on crawl access and what the web says about you. There is no form to fill in.
A proprietary visibility score with no prompts, runs, or assistants behind it.
Pages at volume. Google's spam policies list using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value for users as an example of scaled content abuse. A plan built on hundreds of thin question pages can harm the search visibility AI answers depend on. Where AI-written content helps and where it hurts is covered in can AI do SEO.
The Answer Engine Optimization Agency Scorecard
Score each provider 0, 1, or 2 on every row: 0 if they cannot answer, 1 if the answer is vague, 2 if they show you something concrete. Compare totals, but read the zeros first.
| Criterion | A strong answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Prompt set | A written list of real buyer questions for your market, shared with you |
| Assistants covered | Named assistants, each measured separately |
| Repeat runs | Several runs per prompt, with variation reported |
| Baseline | Captured and dated before work begins |
| Lead connection | A way to tie mentions to calls, forms, or self-reported source |
| Crawl access check | Robots.txt, CDN, and firewall reviewed in the first weeks |
| Content plan | Questions sourced from real buyers, written with real expertise |
| Business facts | A plan to make listings and site details consistent |
| Third party mentions | Earned, with examples of how |
| Reviews | A compliant process for asking every customer |
| SEO coordination | Clear ownership of site changes |
| Reporting | Monthly, showing mentions, descriptions, competitors, and leads |
| Who does the work | Named people you can talk to |
| Exit terms | You keep the content, the data, and the prompt history |
A provider that scores well on measurement but has no answer for the work is selling reports. One that describes plenty of work but cannot measure it is asking you to take results on faith.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does an answer engine optimization agency do?
An answer engine optimization agency works to get your business named, described accurately, and linked when people ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for a recommendation or an answer in your field. The work usually covers making sure AI crawlers can reach your site, building pages that answer the questions buyers actually ask, keeping your business details consistent everywhere they appear, earning mentions on sites you do not control, and measuring how often assistants mention you over time.
Can an AEO agency guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, and the same question can produce a different answer from one run to the next. OpenAI states that sites which block its search crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so an agency can make sure you are eligible, but eligibility is not placement. Treat any guaranteed placement as a reason to keep looking.
Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?
Less than the marketing suggests. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile. AEO puts more weight on answering specific questions clearly, keeping your business facts consistent, and earning third party mentions, but it is built on the same foundation as good SEO rather than replacing it.
How should an AEO agency measure results?
Against a baseline, using a fixed set of real buyer questions, asked in each assistant that matters to you, more than once per question because answers vary. The report should show how often you are mentioned, how you are described, and which competitors appear instead, and it should connect to leads where possible, for example through a how did you hear about us field that lists AI assistants as an option.
Do I need a separate AEO agency if I already have an SEO company?
Usually not. Most of the work that improves AI visibility is the same work a good SEO program already does, and two vendors editing the same pages tends to create conflicts. A separate provider makes most sense when your SEO is strong and handled in house, and you want independent measurement and specific help with entity consistency and third party mentions.
See Where You Stand Before You Compare Anyone
The most useful thing to bring to a provider conversation is your own baseline: what the assistants say about you today, and who they name instead.
