Distributor Catalog SEO: Why 40,000 SKUs Produce 400 Indexed Pages

Pick a manufacturer part number you have stocked for years. Something you know you are good on: you carry it, you have depth, you can ship it same day. Open an incognito window and search that part number by itself.
If your company does not appear on the first page, a buyer who searched that number today ordered from someone else. Not because they sell it better, and not because they have a deeper shelf. Because they published a page for it and you did not.
Now do it four more times with different numbers across different product families. Most distributors we run this test with find that they show up for almost none of them, and the results are dominated by two or three national players plus a handful of regional competitors who happen to have their catalog architecture right.
This is the strange thing about distributor catalog SEO. In most industries, the SEO opportunity has to be manufactured out of nothing. In distribution, it already exists. It is sitting in your ERP as tens of thousands of high-intent search terms attached to products you already stock. The work is not creating demand. It is becoming visible for demand that is already there.
Four Reasons Catalogs Stay Invisible
Products render behind a search box
This is the most common and the most expensive. The catalog is a database, and the site exposes it through a search field or a filter panel. A person can find any product in seconds. A crawler cannot find any of them, because there is no link path to follow and no stable URL to index.
If your product detail pages only appear after a form submission or a JavaScript-driven filter interaction, they effectively do not exist to search engines. Every other problem on this list is secondary to this one.
Faceted navigation multiplies URLs
The opposite failure. Filters generate URLs, and every combination of filters generates another one. Material, size, rating, brand, availability, sort order, page number. Fifteen filters produce more URL combinations than you have products, most of them near-identical.
Three things go wrong at once. Crawl budget gets spent on parameter permutations instead of on real products. Ranking signals split across dozens of URLs showing substantially the same items. And search engines start treating large sections of the site as low-value, which drags on everything else.
Manufacturer descriptions are identical everywhere
You pull product data from the manufacturer. So does every other distributor selling that line. The result is that the same paragraph appears on forty websites, and a search engine choosing which of those forty to rank has no reason to pick yours.
This does not mean you should delete the manufacturer specifications. Buyers need them. It means the specifications alone are not enough to rank on, and something has to be added.
No product structured data
Without product markup, a search engine has to infer from page text that a string of characters is a manufacturer part number, that a number is a diameter, and that an item is in stock. With markup, it reads all of that directly.

It matters considerably more now that AI assistants are being asked to find and compare suppliers, because structured data is the format those systems consume most reliably. Segment the Catalog Before You Touch It
The instinct with 40,000 SKUs is to build 40,000 pages. Do not do that. Thin, templated pages published at scale can suppress the performance of the whole domain, and you will have spent an enormous amount of effort producing pages that never rank.
Segment first. A workable split looks like this.
Tier A, the revenue and demand overlap. Products that drive real margin, have genuine search volume against their part numbers, or represent a category where you hold a stocking or service advantage nobody else in your region can match. This is usually a few hundred to a couple thousand SKUs. These get fully built pages with unique content, application context, compatibility notes, and complete specifications.
Tier B, the long tail worth indexing. Products you legitimately stock and can ship, where the search demand is thin but real, and where being findable by part number is the entire objective. These get a clean, well-structured, indexable template with complete specifications, correct markup, and honest availability. No hand-written prose required.
Tier C, everything else. Special order items, dead SKUs, obsolete lines, duplicates. These get consolidated into family or category pages, or excluded from indexing entirely. Excluding them is not a loss. It concentrates crawl budget and ranking signals on the pages that can actually earn something.
The tiering exercise usually takes a couple of weeks with your ERP data and a keyword tool, and it is the highest-leverage thing you can do before writing a single page.
What a Product Page Actually Needs
For Tier A and B products, the page has to carry a specific set of things.
- The manufacturer part number in the page title, the heading, the URL, and the structured data. This is the search. Treat it as the primary keyword, because it is.
- Complete specifications as text, not as an image. Dimensions, material, rating, thread, finish, tolerance, compliance. A spec table rendered as a JPEG is invisible.
- Alternate identifiers. Your internal SKU, superseded numbers, common misspellings and formatting variants of the part number. Buyers type these inconsistently, with and without dashes.
- Compatibility and application context. What equipment it fits, what it is typically used for, what problem it solves. This is the layer no competitor pulling the same manufacturer feed will have.
- Availability and lead time. For a buyer with a line down, this is frequently more decisive than price.
- A quote or order path that takes one click, with the part number pre-filled.
- Product structured data covering the part number, brand, specifications, and availability.
Notice what is not on that list. A long marketing narrative about your commitment to service is not what makes this page rank or convert. Specificity is.
Cross-Reference Pages: The Most Underused Asset in Distribution
If you do only one thing from this article beyond fixing indexation, do this one.
A meaningful share of urgent distribution searches come from a buyer whose usual part has become a problem. It was discontinued. It was superseded by a new number. It is on backorder from their normal supplier with a twelve-week lead time. Their equipment is down and the part they need is made by a manufacturer they cannot reach.
That buyer searches for an equivalent. And they search with unusual urgency, because something is stopped and every hour has a cost. This is the rare moment when a buyer with an established supplier relationship is actively willing to change suppliers.
Almost nobody publishes this information. Manufacturers avoid it because it points at competitors. Marketplaces avoid it because it requires domain knowledge. Which leaves it available to the distributor whose counter staff answer this exact question every day and have never once written the answer down.
A cross-reference page can be simple. The original part, what it was replaced by, what fits as an equivalent, what the meaningful differences are, and what you have on the shelf. Build these for the part families where you get the most substitution questions, and let your inside sales team tell you which those are. They already know.
Category Pages Need a Reason to Exist
Most distributor category pages are a filtered grid with a heading and nothing else. That page cannot rank against a national competitor, because it offers a search engine no reason to prefer it.
Give it one. Sizing and selection guidance for that category. An explanation of how the grades, ratings, or materials differ and when each is appropriate. The questions buyers ask before choosing. A comparison table. The specification ranges you carry.
This is also the content that captures buyers earlier, before they know the exact part number. Part-number searches are the highest intent, but they are also the narrowest. Selection content reaches the buyer who knows the problem but has not yet chosen the solution, and it is the only realistic way a regional distributor competes for anything broader than a bare number.
Measuring This Properly
Sessions are close to useless here. Better measures:
- Indexation ratio. How many products are indexed versus how many you intended to index. This is the first number to move and the one that gates everything else.
- Part-number visibility. Take a sample of a few hundred part numbers you want to own and track how many rank on page one. This is the cleanest proxy for the actual objective.
- Quote requests and orders by product page, not by site total, so you can see which parts of the catalog are earning and reallocate the work accordingly.
- New account signups attributed to catalog pages, since in distribution the first order frequently matters far less than the relationship it starts.

Why does our product catalog not show up in Google?
Usually for one of four technical reasons, and often all four at once. The catalog renders through a search or filter interface, so individual products never receive a crawlable URL. Faceted navigation generates thousands of near-duplicate URLs that split authority and burn crawl budget. Product pages carry manufacturer-supplied descriptions identical to every other distributor selling the same item, so there is nothing unique to rank. No, and trying is usually a mistake, because thin pages across an entire catalog can hurt more than they help. The approach that works is to segment. The long tail gets a clean, indexable, structured template so it is at least findable by part number. The rest can be consolidated into category or family pages.
How do industrial buyers search for parts online?
Far more specifically than most distributors assume. The highest-intent search in distribution is a bare manufacturer part number, often typed with no other context. Below that sit specification searches for a dimension, a material, a rating, or a thread size, and cross-reference searches where a buyer needs an equivalent to a part that has been discontinued or is on backorder. Broad category terms convert poorly and are dominated by national players, so the winnable, profitable traffic lives almost entirely in the long tail.
Should we publish pricing on a wholesale catalog?
Not necessarily, and this is one of the few places where withholding is genuinely defensible. Contract pricing, tiered accounts, and volume terms make public list pricing complicated. What matters far more is that the product page exists, is indexable, carries the part number and specifications, and offers a fast path to a quote. Buyers searching a part number are usually trying to confirm you carry it and can ship it, so availability, lead time, and a one-click quote request typically do more for conversion than a price would.
How do we handle manufacturer-supplied product descriptions that every competitor also uses?
Keep the manufacturer specifications, since buyers need them and they are what makes the page useful, but add something no competitor has. That can be application context explaining what the part is typically used for, compatibility notes, a comparison against the adjacent size or grade, stocking and lead time information specific to your operation, or answers to the questions your counter staff field about that item. You do not need to rewrite the specifications. You need to add a layer of genuine information around them.

Cross-reference pages document equivalents and substitutes: what to use when a part is discontinued, superseded, backordered, or made by a competing manufacturer.
