What a Manufacturing Capability Page Should Actually Contain

The One-Paragraph Capabilities Page Problem
Open almost any manufacturer's website and find the Capabilities page. You will usually see a bulleted list of processes, a paragraph about commitment to quality, and a photograph of the shop floor taken at an angle that hides the older machines.
That page cannot rank for anything, and it cannot convert anyone. It cannot rank because it is not about any particular thing, and search engines rank pages that are about particular things. It cannot convert because the engineer reading it still does not know whether you can hold their tolerance, run their material, or handle their volume, so they leave and check the next candidate.
Meanwhile the actual answers exist. They are in the head of your shop foreman, in a quoting spreadsheet, and in a capability statement PDF that gets emailed after someone already asked. The information is not missing. It is unpublished.
A capability page fixes that by taking one process, one material, or one service and telling the whole truth about it on a page of its own.
One Page Per Capability, Not One Page For All of Them
The structural change matters more than the writing.
If you run five processes across four material families for six industries, you do not have one capability. You have a matrix, and each meaningful cell in that matrix is a page a buyer might be searching for. Someone searching for a specific process on a specific material in a specific industry will land on the page that addresses exactly that, and a general overview page will lose to a specific one every time.
The practical starting point is one page per distinct process, one per major material family, and one per industry you genuinely serve. For most manufacturers that is somewhere between eight and thirty pages.
Do not inflate the count. Depth is the whole point. Eight pages carrying real specifications will outperform forty pages of restated marketing language, and thin pages published at scale can drag down the performance of the entire site. Build fewer, better.
The Anatomy of a Capability Page
Here is the structure that works, in the order a technical reader wants it.
1. What the capability is, stated plainly. Two or three sentences. What the process does, what it produces, and what kind of problem it solves. Write it so a purchasing agent who is not an engineer can follow it, because purchasing will read this page too.
2. Materials. Every material family you run this process on, named specifically. Grades and alloys where relevant. If there are materials you deliberately do not run, saying so is useful information rather than a weakness.
3. Tolerances and specifications. The number that decides whether an engineer keeps reading. State realistic standard capability, not the tightest result you ever achieved on a good day with a new tool. If capability varies by material or geometry, say that.
4. Size and volume range. Minimum and maximum dimensions, weights, and quantities. Both ends matter. A shop that will run fifty pieces is valuable to one buyer, and a shop that will run fifty thousand is valuable to a different one. Being vague loses both.
5. Equipment. What you actually run this on, with capacities. This does more work than most manufacturers expect, because an experienced engineer reads an equipment list and immediately knows what you can and cannot do.
6. Lead times. Typical, and honest. This is one of the first three questions on every inquiry. Answering it on the page removes an email round trip and signals that you are used to being asked.
7. Certifications and quality process. Which certifications apply to this capability, their scope, and how you handle inspection, documentation, and traceability. For regulated industries this is a hard filter rather than a nice detail.
8. Typical applications. What this capability is usually used for and in which industries. This is what a buyer scans to decide whether you have done something like their thing before.
9. Evidence. A problem you solved with this capability, written by problem and outcome. This works even when the client name must stay confidential. "A customer in agricultural equipment came to us with a part failing at a weld joint" carries real weight without naming anyone.
10. A quote path that fits the capability. Not a generic contact form. A request that asks for what your team needs to quote this specific kind of work, with the ability to attach a drawing.
11. Questions and answers. The five questions your sales team answers about this capability on every call. Where the Information Comes From
This is where most manufacturing content programs die, so it is worth being concrete.
Do not assign the page to an engineer. Asking a busy technical person to write a web page produces nothing for six weeks, then produces something written under protest at eleven at night.
Interview instead. Thirty minutes, recorded, with whoever knows the capability best. Six questions cover nearly everything:
- What exactly do we run here, and on what equipment?
- What materials do we run it on, and which do we avoid?
- How tight do we hold it, realistically, day in and day out?
- What kind of job is this perfect for, and what kind of job should go somewhere else?
- What do customers always ask before they trust us with this?
- Tell me about a job where this capability solved a real problem.
Thirty minutes of that produces enough material for a complete page. The engineer then reviews a draft, which takes ten minutes instead of six weeks and gets you technical accuracy without asking anyone to become a writer.
The review step is not optional. Published capability content that overstates what you can hold is worse than no content, because it generates RFQs you have to decline and a credibility problem you then have to repair.
Writing for Four Readers at Once
A capability page is read by four different people looking for four different things, and the structure above serves all of them if you keep them in mind.
The engineer wants sections three, four, five, and eight, and will decide within about twenty seconds whether to keep going. Put the specifications high enough on the page that they do not have to hunt.
Purchasing wants sections six and ten, plus a general sense that you are stable and established. Lead times and a functional quote path matter more to this reader than anything technical.
Quality wants section seven, current and specific. Scope, registrar, status.
Operations wants section four and any signal about capacity. How much can you absorb, and what happens when a schedule moves.
You do not need four separate pages. You need one page that does not accidentally leave out three of these four readers, which is what a paragraph of marketing prose does by default.
Common Mistakes
Adjectives instead of numbers. "Tight tolerances" tells a buyer nothing and matches no search. A stated tolerance range tells them everything and matches the search exactly.
Hiding the specifications in a PDF. The download is fine as a supplement. It is a poor primary container, because search engines and AI systems handle page content far better than they handle documents.
Listing every capability on every page. If all your pages say the same thing, they compete with each other and none of them wins. One page, one capability, done thoroughly.
Publishing aspirational capability. If you can technically do something but rarely do it well, saying otherwise buys you an RFQ you will regret.
Writing the company history first. Founding year and mission statement are fine near the bottom. Nobody qualifying a supplier reads them before the specifications.
Never updating. Equipment changes, certifications renew, capacity shifts. A capability page describing a machine you sold two years ago costs credibility with exactly the reader you were trying to impress.
Which Pages to Build First
Do not start alphabetically. Start where three things overlap.
Work you want more of. There is a difference between what you can do and what you would like your schedule to be full of. Build for the second one.
Work you are genuinely differentiated at. Where you have an equipment, tolerance, material, or turnaround advantage that is defensible and true.
Work with identifiable search demand. A basic keyword check will show which process, material, and industry combinations people actually search. Some capabilities have real demand and some have almost none.
Where all three overlap, build first. After that, build the pages covering whatever your sales team explains most often from scratch on calls. Those pages pay for themselves fastest, because they work as sales enablement material long before they finish earning their rankings.
